The Red Bulls made news yet again at the sports books since they signed Mexico’s national team captain Rafael Marquez.
When they signed France star Thierry Henry, New York got interest earlier this season. New York could perhaps be a winning team against sports book soccer odds and will be a exciting team to watch.
The Red Bulls is a founding team of Major League Soccer, although it has gone through numerous name variations since the league’s beginnings in 1996. After the team was sold to Red Bull GmbH, they’ve got used the name “Red Bulls”. This season brings them a new stadium, a new head coach, and a new group of participants. They are expecting to considerably improve on their disappointing 2009 season. New head coach Hans Backe got rid of the prior coach’s players that he held accountable for the 2009 season. He is also focusing on signing more European participants, as opposed to the South American participants that are usually sought after in the MLS.
Sportsbook odds have not liked New York that much this season as the New York Red Bulls are last in the Eastern Conference of the MLS. They just haven’t achieved very much with the team as it stands. They may get some action and be liked more frequently with the addition of Marquez. New York now possesses 3 Designated Players in Henry, Marquez and Juan Pablo Angel.
The addition of Marquez ought to aid New York on and off the field when you bet on games. He came out for Mexico in 94 games and has been their captain since 2002. He played with Barcelona in recent years and was on their championship teams in 2005, 2006, 2009 and in 2010.
New York has a total of five victories and only 21 points this season. The addition of Marquez is more focused on next season and getting enthusiasts than it is for this year since New York isn’t part of the playoff contest. Marquez likely will play midfield for the New York Red Bulls. He isn’t a substantial scoring menace but even at his age he is likely better than what New York had in the midfield. At least with the additions of Henry and Marquez they will be worth watching, even though New York hasn’t played well for the most part this season. They could even collect a handful more victories in the process.
There’s no question that with the addition of participants like Henry and Marquez, the MLS is receiving some interest at the sports book. What shouldn’t be overlooked though is that Henry and Marquez really did not have a place in top European leagues. Barcelona did not use Henry much last season and they released Marquez just a few days ago. The MLS just doesn’t have as much skill as leagues like the Premier or La Liga and players who have substantial reputations but lowering skills can still be efficient in what is a lower level of soccer in the MLS.
